Hurricane Season and Work Ongoing

We are coming up for air briefly to bring to you word of what has been going on, should you find interest in knowing.  Today we will talk a little about hurricanes, our seasonal obligations progress, and a short talk on financial preparedness.

First off, my friend Roach and I, whom attended survival weekend with me, entertained a very short discussion on possibly heading out and hitting a trail to observe the effects of the recent torrential downpours.  I am not too certain of the time span it has occurred outside of it being a very short window for such rainfall but in case you have not heard it on your local news we have recently received in excess of 2 feet of rain in some areas of the state.

However, with concern over current temperatures and humidity and the effects it has on the body during midday exertion, and the lack of ability to pack enough H2O we have ceased playing around with the idea…for now :)

On to other things.  We were beginning to feel sluggardly due to our shortage of updates lately but we did notice that it seems to be a widespread issue.  Many of the blogs we regularly visit are undergoing the same sort of editorial drought as we are, we assume this may be a side effect of the work that arrives with summer.  Nevertheless we wanted to introduce a little freshness today.

So, what has happened around farmurbia?

Structurally we are still a little behind.  We have settled on a new design for our side fences but have yet to implement them.  We need to make this a priority as either possums, armadillos, and racoons are eating our tomatoes or squirrels are.  The sooner we get the fence in and the thorny bushes follow hopefully the better we will be.  After that we resort to chicken wire enclosures around the gardens.  Also structurally we have not implemented any of the watering systems we designed but this is a good thing as our system of garden trial and error has made manifest some design changes we will work on for next year.

We are getting a really good look at what we will and will not continue to plant.  Off the list are strawberries, probably cabbage and lettuce, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower.  Staying on are pole beans, tomatoes, carrots, collard greens, peppers, peas, and cucumbers.  We will be taking a look at a few new crops as well including melons, cowpeas or black eyed peas, corn, and increasing the planting of tomatoes and pole beans.

We still have a good bit of maintenance and upkeep work to do around here which is tending to damper production in other areas but we won’t bore you with those details as we are sure they are things you are all familiar with.

Of note and of primary importance right now is hurricane season, I believe it started today and will last through November.  We will be focusing on checking our current supplies to make sure they still work and adding to what we have to ensure we have adequate stock should the need arise.  We will be looking at a couple of state resources for hurricane preparedness and third party sources to make sure we are well prepared for the season.  Being that we have  yet to implement a family wide emergency plan we will probably hasten to draft something quick specifically designed for hurricane scenarios.  If so, we will share that with you.

We also have a good article to share with you regarding financial preparedness, not just for the here and now but also for the future.  We have applied for permission to reprint the article in entirety and should it be granted we will post it here.

And lastly a few final things to share with you.  I took the plunge this past Monday and enrolled in college at the age of 30 something.  I enrolled for a BSBA in Computer Information Systems.  I am using a system called CollegePlus! that is quite counter-conventional and immensely cost-effective while being completely legitimate and accredited.  Google the name and find out more.  We will be taking a hit here at farmurbia soon as I will be losing my job after 6+ years of working with the same Internet security company/ISP.  However, we do not fret and we do not fear.  We feel that we are simply being reassigned by God and whatever trials and tribulations we encounter along the way are being used by Him to mold us to his will and we welcome it.

We did come across something that does help out in these situations and especially if you are a Christian and are in debt, need to change your consumer habits, or just need to live a more financially fit life.  This thing is hot off the presses new, we just caught wind of it today and it is called Deliverance From Debt, located at http://www.deliverancefromdebt.com.  It was created by Dr. Gary North, an Austrian school Christian economist who started the Institute for Christian Economics and advised Dr. Ron Paul economically early on in his service in Congress.  We signed up for this today and will be going through the 12 steps and using the available tools to realign our financial lifestyles.

Well ladies and gents that just about wraps things up for now.  We apologize for the scarcity of updates lately but as you are also probably feeling the encroachment of summer weeds and encroaching tree limbs we entreat you to understand.

Stay tuned for upcoming musings on hurricane prep!
